Figs north of where figs should grow

Most figs fruit on last year's wood, so a winter that kills the top kills the crop. ‘Chicago Hardy’ fruits on this year's wood too, which is why it earns its name.

Plant it against a south wall, mulch its crown deep in November, and do not give up on it in April. It is always the last thing in the garden to wake up.
