In April the bare branches go pink with flowers that sprout straight from the wood. Then the leaves come: heart-shaped, deep burgundy, and see-through when the evening sun is behind them.

A natural understorey tree. It is happiest at the edge of bigger trees, with morning sun and a little shelter.
